Overview
Overall Comments

This is an opportunity to own an example one of the most widely recognized and highly desirable, classic British sports cars. This E-Type is a most original motorcar with a genuine low mileage in a very good, usable condition, having been well maintained and cared for. The car is currently Guernsey registered with viewing by appointment. The local registration number is not included in the sale.

Body

This is a very solid car – with a good condition body, having benefitted from Ziebart undercoating treatment when new, helping to prevent any corrosion taking hold. The paintwork remains smart and very presentable, with only a few small blemishes. All brightwork is present, correct and in good condition (wire wheels have been fitted).

Mechanical

The Jaguar runs and drives very well. Most recent works include the fitment of new front brake discs in 2021 and a full service in 2023. Currently, the cooling system would benefit from some attention as the heater is not operational.

Interior

The interior appears original and well preserved, with the seats showing some patination. The headlining is in very good shape and the dashboard is complete and fully functioning.

History

On its introduction in 1961, the Jaguar E-Type was swiftly recognized as an outstanding design, boasting both stylish looks and excellent engineering. It has since been acclaimed as an icon of the motoring world and remains one of the most widely recognized and highly regarded classic cars on the planet.

The first cars, which subsequently became known as Series 1 vehicles, were available as either a 2-seat Fixed Head Coupé or an Open 2-seater (‘Roadster’) model, powered by the 6-cylinder, 3.8 litre XK engine from the outgoing Jaguar XK150. In 1964 the engine size was increased to 4.2 litres and in 1966 a longer-wheelbase 2+2 Coupé model was introduced, together with an automatic transmission option.

The Series 2 models were released in 1968, largely in response to vehicle legislation in the USA, requiring a number of safety-related changes which altered the appearance of the car. Revised bumpers, grille and lighting arrangements mostly, but the update also included power steering and air conditioning options. The Series 3 models appeared in 1971 introducing further, more radical alterations and a new V12 powerplant.

This late Series 2 Fixed Head Coupe was first registered new in the UK in January 1971 in – we believe – the Isle of Wight. We have no further history until the mid-1990s, when the last MOT certificate issued showed it having 47,638 miles recorded. It was purchased by a Jersey-based owner in October of 1995 and re-registered in the island.

In September 2004, the E-Type moved to Guernsey with a new owner, who only kept the vehicle for a year before moving it on (with 52,548 miles showing) to a second short-term owner (2 years) and then a more permanent custodian, who cared for the car until 2014. It has been in the hands of the current owner since September of that year, well maintained and with light use so that it now has just under 58,000 miles logged.
